Tesla coil that reproduces sound Solid State Digital Control Design broken into three main parts o Audio detector o Solid state coil driver o Tesla coil General Overview

Part I: Audio Detector Converts audio signal into control signal Researching several different conversion methods Detector needs to be voltage isolated from driver circuit

Part II: Driver Circuit (Control Circuit) Audio detector signal switches MOSFET MOSFET controls current flow through inductive load o High – signal generator drives through inductive load o Low – No current passes through inductive load

Part II: Driver Circuit (Signal Generator) Signal generator – sawtooth waveform o Converts to train of positive impulses Needs to supply high power (200 W-400 W best est.) Needs to convert wall power to usable signal

Part III: Tesla Coil (Coil Design) Essentially giant air-core transformer o Large turns ratio (approximately 10 to 1200) Determines resonant frequency o Driver circuit needs to match resonant freq. Most challenging part to build physically

Part III: Tesla Coil (Output) Output – train of impulses bounded by square envelope o Impulses at resonant frequency Resonant freq. >> audio freq. o Approximates continuous discharge Envelope contains audio information
