The Best Teacher I Ever Had
The best teacher I ever had was Mrs. Bass. She was nice and thought I was smart and so she let me get away with not doing my homework.

Mrs. Bass paced the room. Her thick bangs swept into her eyes as she read aloud from The Catcher in the Rye holding the book far too close to her face. In the back of the room near the radiator that thumped and hummed even the football players intently followed along, raising their hands to read passages aloud. I watched her move, awestruck. She was a portly woman, shaped like a mother and when I couldn’t keep up with my reading she often let it slide instead of chastising me. She was the first person to make me feel like I was smart.
