2 Not history… Herstory The American Association of University Women (AAUW) was founded by Marion Talbot along with her friend Ellen Richards; both well-educated women who faced limited options after graduating from college. The social norm in the late 1800’s was that women should not pursue higher education. Those who did were often ridiculed and ostracized. In 1881, the first meeting of the organization that would become AAUW was held and in 1885, they completed their first research study. It was a study that disproved the theory that higher education harms women’s health.

9 Funding AAUW Fund The AAUW Fund is the general fund. It helps to advance AAUW’s mission by sustaining all our programs and activities. AAUW is a non- profit organization. Donations to AAUW help to support women’s causes.

11 $3.7 MILLION How much AAUW Gives to Students & Grassroots Projects Every Year 43% of Fellowships and Grants Support STEM Fields 12,000 Women & Girls Are Empowered by the Community Action Grant Projects AAUW Support $156,413 Amount of money raised in 1920 for Marie Curie to purchase 1 gram of radium for her Nobel Prize-winning research

12 Working Together Forming and maintaining relationships with other organizations is key in order to create change. In 1985, AAUW joined a group of women’s organizations to launch the first National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL). This annual conference prepares students to become the next generation of leaders.

13 AAUW Legacy 1940  Helped university women flee dictatorships during World War II 1964  Members worked to help pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 & the Voting Rights Act the following year 1981  Legal Advocacy Fund helped the “Cornell 11” win a $250,000 settlement

14 AAUW Legacy (cont.) 1993  Help advocate for the passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act 2008  Received special consultative status with the United Nations 2009  Led efforts to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

15 AAUW Delaware AAUW Delaware partners with organizations like the Delaware Commission for Women and the Delaware Financial Literacy Institute/The Money School for events and activities, and co- sponsors candidate forums with the League of Women Voters. 4 of the 8 Women’s Bill AAUW DE has lobbied for have passed the House & Senate and are scheduled to be signed by Governor Markell on Tuesday, June 30 th ! Two more may be acted upon before then as well.

20 Internship  My role is to assist to AAUW DE Public Policy Director -Becoming a member of AAUW. -Attend/participate in events, activities and meetings. -Creation of informational and educational materials for DE AAUW members. -Presenting at events and meetings when necessary. -Reviewing and researching laws and legislative bills. -Interview DE legislators regarding policies identified by DE AAUW. -Tracking and distributing legislative information to AAUW members. -Providing recommendations and feedback on how to get more DE AAUW members involved in Policy initiatives -Researching and providing informational summaries on policy issues. -Assisting with the organization and planning of events and activities. -Identifying other organizations with similar causes; compiling information and creating a calendar of events to inform DE AAUW members.
