Functional Family All family members fulfil their roles and responsibilities.

Dysfunctional Family When one or more members of the family do not fulfil their responsibilities. Family is out of balance Ex: parent who leaves, teen who rebels

Two-parent Family Made up of a married couple and their children
Usually centred around the children Sometimes called a nuclear family ¼ of families

Single-parent Family Mother or Father takes care of the children
Occurs as result of: Divorce Separation Death Children outside of marriage 1/8 of families

Foster Parenting Provides children with substitute families while their parents are unable to care for them Can be for long or short time periods
