1 NANO 101 Introduction to Nanotechnology Implications of Nanotechnology & Ethics Discussion Questions
2
Discussion Topic 1 Is Nanotechnology… a new field? a subset of other fields (medicine, electronics, etc.)? a revamped version of chemistry and physics?
3
Discussion Topic 2 What are some risks that may come along with putting nano-enhanced products on the market? What risks are specific to nanoparticles and nano- enhanced products?
4
Risks of Nanotechnology: Example C 60 –Not soluble in water –In higher concentrations, form nanoclusters in water (100 ppm) Toxicology Studies –These “soluble” clusters are cytotoxic –Adding small molecules to clusters prevents toxicity
5
Discussion Topic 3 Regarding the possible harm to health and the environment as a result of nanotechnology or nano-enhanced products, who (or what) is responsible/accountable for each of the following? preventing risks / creating regulation dealing with effects / clean-up educating the public
6
"Scientists think about things like ethics, but they don't let it interfere with their work. Businesses and venture capitalists tend to think that the science will speak for itself and that society will just accept the idea that the benefits of nano-technology outweigh the risks.” - Dr. Emmanuelle Boubour, Rice University 6
7
Public Perception of Nanotechnology

8 Before being told about nanotech After being told about nanotech Survey Conducted by Project for Emerging Nanotechnolgies: http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=12633&page=86
9
Discussion Topic 4 What priority should be placed on developing new nanotechnology products and techniques that will be highly beneficial for some people, versus defending the interests of individuals and groups that may not benefit from (or may even be hurt by) them?
10
Responsible Development: Societal Outlook Access to nanotechnology benefits Effects on jobs Medical innovations and methods Manufacturing impacts Potential health/environmental effects Privacy Issues
