2 Today our objective is: 7.10A Evaluate a summary of the original text for accuracy of the main ideas, supporting details, and overall meaning.

3 We are going to sort today! No…not by color or type of shoes… No…not by color or type of shoes… OUR GOAL: To be able to determine what is important in a reading selection, fiction and nonfiction, compared to what is not important as evidenced by a successful sort of chapter 12 and 13 of “The Lightning Thief.”

4 Read the summary of ch. 11 Underline the IMPORTANT EVENTS in the summary.

5 Read the chapter 11 summary HINT: the only things that are important are things that affect the end of the story (or in our case, the end of the scene). Things that move the plot FORWARD to the next setting.

6 With your shoulder partner: Go over the important details each of you underlined. your DID NOT As you listen to your partner – put a star on your paper next to anything they DID NOT underline. Did you miss anything? Be ready to explain why!

7 NEXT: If you have 2 SIBLINGS stand UP! PAIR UP! IF you have 3 SIBLINGS stand UP! PAIR UP! If you have 1 SIBLING stand UP! PAIR UP!

8 With your NEW partner: Use the timeline paper to quickly note everything that happened in the story (ON the timeline).

9 NOW: the most important part! With your partner – narrow down your timeline to the FOUR MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS or DETAILS! These events must tell us the most essential things that happened in the chapter!

10 But Mrs. Pena… HOW do I know what is the most important event?? Remember the 4 important events are important and affect the ending of the story (chapter)! WHAT EVENTS MOVE THE STORY FORWARD? WHAT EVENTS MOVE THE STORY FORWARD?

11 HOW DID WE DO? What are the 4 most important details?
