Teaching and Learning “ If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”- Ignacio Estrada

Definition: Differentiated Instruction Differentiation means tailoring instruction to meet individual needs. Whether teachers differentiate content, process, products, or the learning environment, the use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction. ( Carol Ann Tomlinson)

Having high expectations for all students. Providing multiple assignments within units that are oriented toward students with different levels of achievement. With teacher direction, allowing students to choose, ways to learn and how to demonstrate what they have learned. Permitting students to demonstrate mastery of material they already know and progress at their own pace through new material. What Differentiated Instruction IS

Structuring class assignments so they require high levels of critical thinking but permit a range of responses. Assigning some activities geared to different learning styles, levels of thinking, levels of interest, and levels of achievement. When appropriate, providing students with opportunities to have choices about what they learn.

What Differentiated Instruction is NOT Absolute individualization. It isn ’ t a different lesson plan for each student each day. Assigning the same work to all students most of the time. Using top students as assistant teachers- having students teach material they have mastered to others who have not mastered it. Assigning more work at the same level to high-achieving students. Individualizing all of the time. Often, it is preferable for students to work as a whole class..

Why Use Technology to Differentiate Instruction?

But What Tools Do I Use?

Now....ask these questions What tools do my students know or might they learn to use? What digital technologies are available to the students in the classroom, at school, at home? What digital technologies can students bring with them to school to assist in their learning? Will the digital technologies that are part of the options for students really improve their learning relative to standards, objectives, and intended learning results?
