Research and Inquiry Models Jigsaw—Part 1 1. Choose a partner with whom to work. 2. Draw a model from the slips. 3. Using both resources in this room as well as others you might find on the computer create an understanding for your team of the model’s main features, salient points, positive and negative features… 4. Using the frameworks sheet, create a comparison of the model back to the 5 As model we used in Class 1 5. In your opinion, what makes the model either a research model or an inquiry model? 6. Re-convene in the room at 5:50

Research and Inquiry Models Jigsaw—Part 2 Next Week 1. Be prepared to share your findings in a group session meant to construct our background knowledge of the model. **Please write neatly so that others can read **Include enough detail that others will understand what you are talking about

Model Comparisons What are the underlying components of all (most? some?) of the models? If you create your own model, what things do you feel are important to consider?

Model Comparisons So… What’s the difference between using a research model and fostering inquiry with your students?

Content Activity 1: Inquiry Model #2 Focus on Inquiry: A Teacher’s Guide to Implementing Inquiry-based Learning Alberta Learning Added to Your Knowledge? Confusing?

Teaching the use of inquiry requires the development of certain teacher dispositions. 1. Use the scale to gage your initial reaction to each statement 2. Use the “On the Continuum” structure to analyze and discuss.

What does your disposition have to do with using inquiry with students? EVERYTHING!

Teacher Collaboration Dream Weavers video clip Switch to Collaboration Power Point

 Expect to spend time planning, designing, teaching, and assessing.  Spend time planning up front!  Keep yourself, teachers, and students organized by creating a research journal, notebook, or folder. Put all expectations, guidelines and requirements in writing.

 In your plan book, create a timeline for the ENTIRE project; include touch-base meetings  Communicate via e-mail, etc., weekly DURING the project  Make modifications for what works for one unit in future units. ◦ Be vigilant about keeping track of time (activities taking more time, etc.)

 Relationships are KEY! ◦ Play to each collaborator’s expertise  Acknowledge that inquiry is a dynamic, fulfilling, challenging and creative process, instead of a traditional and mechanical process.  Establish the context of inquiry within curriculum content

Share with the group what you are initially thinking about doing for your personal inquiry project.

Weekly Reflection Prompts  On-Course prompts ◦ Thursday afternoon ◦ Write your reflection ◦ Post highlight by Sunday at 7 pm ◦ Replies to highlights by noon on Tuesdays

Settling In Activity On the Smart Board… Take a few minutes to reflect on your reading of Gardner’s “Beyond the Herd Mentality” We’ll use these to begin a discussion at the start of class.
