What is IT? IT represents the technical perspective and includes telecommunications, computers and automatic technologies. More formally, it is the enabling mechanism which facilitates the processing and flow of the information, as well as the technologies used in the physical processing to produce a product or provide a service (Peppard, 1993)

Why IT ?

Questions for reflection Should IT empower teacher or student? Does IT make us smarter? Is IT a more effective tool than paper & pencil, chalk & board, ruler & compasses? Does IT guarantee quality education?

An Ugly Scenario requires the technology to do things that learners/teachers do better, and requires learners to do things that technologies do better Use of computers in education

3T Model (Taylor, 1980) Tutor - computer programmed by “experts” and the student was then tutored by the computer Tool - the computer had some useful capabilities programmed into it, e.g. WP, statistics Tutee - helped the student learn about logic processes, e.g. BASIC

Why Information Technology Students must be globally aware and able to access, evaluate, and communicate information Technology can foster an increase in the quantity and quality of students’ thinking, writing, and solving complex problems Schools must increase their productivity and efficiency

Contribution made by the use of IT Empowering the learners enhancing teacher-learner interaction enhancing the interaction, peer support and collaboration of learners enhancing the interaction between the learners and the community

Examples of Popular IT Resources for Teaching and Learning Common Computer Software Applications Presentation Software Special Purpose Software for Subject Teaching and Learning Internet Resources Multimedia / Hypermedia CAL Packages Mindtools / Cognitive tools etc….

Models of IT Use in Teaching & Learning (Law, 1999)

Transmission model Teacher as subject matter expect, expect presenter and evaluator

Facilitation model Teacher as a cognitive coach who guide the learner through the cognitive process, providing cognitive scaffolds

Liberal co-construction model Teacher as providing an enabling physical and organizational infrastructure for knowledge co- construction & exploration, and acting as a partner in learning

Knowledge community model Learner as producer of knowledge and teachers as coaches to help students develop the metacognitive abilities required of members in a knowledge community
