Overview ► Project Background ► Mission Statement ► Customer Identification ► PDS ► House of Quality ► Conclusion
3
Project Background ► 2.25% of energy required to operate a truck is lost in the drive train (fully loaded, level road, 1 hour) ► Energy loss can be reduced by heating the axle lubricant ► DTNA expects a 1% improvement in overall efficiency (approximately $800/year for each truck)
4
Mission Statement ► Design and build a device to achieve and maintain specified axle lubricant temperature range. (65-80 °C, 2 °C/minute) ► Deliverables: Working Prototype Detail Drawings Bill Of Materials Detailed Design Report
5
Customer Identification ► Primary External Customer: Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) ► Primary Internal Customer: PSU (ME 492/493)
6
Product Design Specification High Priorities ► Device is to maintain a temperature range of 65-80 °C ► Device must show an ROI within 2yrs ► Device must improve net efficiency of vehicle enough to satisfy ROI ► Device is to heat at a rate of 2 °C/min
7
PDS Continued… ► Device must weigh less than 20 lbs. ► Device should be easily retrofitted ► Device must comply with safety regulations ► Device must be relatively low maintenance
8
House of Quality
9
Conclusion ► The deliverables of this project will serve as a starting point for further development by Daimler. ► There is a potential for a significant increase in efficiency. ► Application will ultimately benefit the environment and reduce oil dependency.
