1 Engineering measurement
Mr. Geesey

2 Objectives After this presentation you should be able to…
Apply measurement skills to a design challenge. Differentiate the different scales on an Engineer’s Scale. Analyze the importance of measurement in society. Define scale and orally explain how scale is used.

3 Vocabulary Check Scale Ratio Engineers Scale
The ratio by which something is made smaller or larger typically in a drawing. (ex. Scale car models) Ratio The relation between two amounts showing the number of times one value contains or is contained within the other. Engineers Scale The instrument for measuring distances and transferring measurements at a fixed ratio of length.

4 SOMETHING:SOMETHING ELSE
Scale Breakdown Any Scale always contains 2 parts, in ratio format. SOMETHING:SOMETHING ELSE 1:1 1:2 1:4

5 Engineers Scale 6 different scales on one instrument 1:10 1:20 1:30
1:40 1:50 1:60

6 Scale example If 1 inch = 20 feet 1:20 Scale Then 1 in = 20 feet
2 inches = 40 feet 1:20 Scale 1 in = 20 feet

7 Real world application
Determining distances between buildings, and laying out sites. 1in:60ft Line is 8in long 480ft apart

8 Further examples

9 Review What is a ratio? How many scales are on the Engineer’s Scale?
If we are using the 1:30 scale where 1in:30miles, and our line is 5in, how far of a distance is the line representing?
