Basic Measurements/Inst ruments Intro to Fundamentals of Engineering Tools, Instruments and Measures

Systems of Measurement O English/Standard O Metric (also known as SI)

Most basic forms of Measures O Length O Measures the distance of something O Mass O Similar to weight, an object’s resistance to a force, like gravity O Time O How long something occurs, helping to put history in order and giving a standard to measure and calculate from O Capacity (Volume) O Measures the space a substance occupies or contains O Temperature O Measure of heat O Value O Measure of benefit provided by a good or service This Week Next Week { {

Basic Units of Length O Metric: O Milimeter, centimeter, meter, kilometer O English/Standard: O Inch, foot, yard, mile

Basic Conversions METRIC (SI) O 10 mm = 1 cm O (milli means one thousandth 1/1000) O 100 cm = 1 m O (centi means one hundreth 1/100) O 1000 m = 1 km O (kilo means one thousand) How long is the black bar in this picture?

Basic Conversions English/Standard O 12 in = 1 foot O 3 ft = 1 yard O 5,280 ft = 1,760 yd = 1 mile

Exercises.. 1. A plank of wood is 1.5 meters long. What length is it in: O Centimeters? O Millimeters?

Weight vs. Mass O The weight of an object is based on the pull of the Earth’s gravity on that object. O Weight can change – gravitational forces are different at different distances from the center of the earth. The weight of an object is less on a high mountain than at sea level. O Mass is the quantity of matter in an object. O Mass is constant everywhere and measured using a balance.

Basic Units of Mass O Metric: O Gram (g), milligram (mg), kilogram (kg) 1 kg = 1000 g 1 g = 1000 mg O English/Standard: O Ounce (oz), pound (lb), ton (t) 1 lb = 16 oz 1 t = 2,240 lbs

Exercises.. 1.How much does the jar weigh in ounces?: ____________ 2.How much does the barbell weigh in kg?: ____________

Basic Units of Time O 60 seconds (s) = 1 minute (min) O 3,600 s = 60 min = 1 hour (hr) O 24 hr = 1 day O 365.242 days = 1 year (yr) How many seconds are in 1 day? ________________ How many minutes in 1 year? _________________

Physical Environmental Measures – Concepts O Temperature O Humidity O Light O Amperage, Voltage and Resistance

To Do O Read the value output from the portable instruments O Record the value output from the portable instruments
