Norm- a Set of rules based on socially or culturally shared beliefs of how an individual ought to behave Social Learning theory › Created by Albert Bandura › Human learn behaviour through observational learning › People can learn by watching models and imitating their behaviour
3
Attention- The person must first pay attention to the model Retention- The observer must be able to remember the behaviour that has been observed Motor Reproduction- The observer has to be able to replicate the action Motivation- Learners must want to demonstrate what they have learned
4
There are four factors that will affect whether someone will imitate or learn › Consistency-If the model is consistent with their behavior, then the observer will be more likely to imitate Example- Being brave › Identification with the model- There is a tendency for to imitate models who are like ourselves Example- Age and Gender › Rewards/punishment- People can learn from observing what happens to others, but don’t have experience it themselves Vicarious reinforcement › Liking the model-Warm and friendly models are more likely to be imitated than cold, uncaring models Yarrow et al. – Showed children learn altruistic behaviour (helping others for no personal gain)

Albert Bandura › From the department of psychology at Stanford University Bandura et al. (1961) Wanted to see if children would imitate aggression modeled by an adult and whether they were morel likely to imitate same-sex models Children aged 3 to 6 years (36 boys and 36 girls) were divided into groups › One group was exposed to adult models who showed aggression by bashing an inflatable doll › Second group observed a non-aggressive adult who assembled toys for 10 minutes › Third was the controlled who did see anything http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHHdovKHDNU

Huesmann and Eron (1986) › Carried out a longitudinal study, monitoring children’s behaviour over a 15 year period › Found a positive correlation between the number of hours of violence watched television by elementary school children and the level of aggression as a teenager › Found that those who were more watched a lot of violence of T.V. when they were likely to be arrested and prosecuted when they got older
