1 Observational Learning (AKA: Social Learning Theory)
Learning in the absence of direct experience Learning process in which we learn new behaviors by observing the behavior of others

2 Key Terms: Model: The person being observed in observational learning
2. Modeling: The process of observing and imitating a specific behavior

3 Key Terms: 3. Vicarious Learning:
Learning by seeing the consequences of another person’s behavior You are conditioned “through” them If the model = reinforced you are more likely to imitate that behavior If the model = punished you are less likely to imitate that behavior

4 The “Bobo Doll Experiments
Albert Bandura American Psychologist who has done studies in observational learning Studied the effects of modeling on behavior

5 The Bobo Doll Experiments
Children watched an adult model show aggressive behavior toward a bobo doll Experimental conditions: The model was praised The model was punished The model received no consequences for the aggressive behavior

6 The Bobo Doll Experiments

7 The Bobo Doll Experiments Results:
The children exposed to the aggressive model who was reinforced were more likely to act in physically aggressive ways. Both the imitative physical and verbal aggression were rarely, if ever, exhibited by the children exposed to the punished model.

8 Latent Leaning Edward Toleman Latent means hidden.
Sometimes learning is not immediately evident. Rats needed a reason to display what they have learned.

9 Insight Learning Wolfgang Kohler and his Chimpanzees.
Some animals learn through the “ah ha” experience.
