4 Under Geologic Time Tab Write the definition below
The geologic time scale is a visual record of Earth’s history with the individual units based on changes in the rocks and fossils

5 Hadean Eon Named for the Greek god of the underworld hades.
The first 640 million years of the earth’s history Molten rock Ancient atmosphere was poisonous – no oxygen

6 Archean Eon Period of time from 4-2.5 Billion years ago
First solid surfaces - protocontinents– oldest rocks Extensive volcanic activity Water vapor condenses and Earth’s first oceans form Early life – unicellular – cynobacteria

7 Proterozoic eon Time from 2.5 to .542 billion years ago
Larger land masses form Unicellular plant life begins to produce oxygen from photosynthesis This is known as the great oxygen event and also the oxygen catastrophe (because new oxygen atmosphere was harmful to organisms that evolved in the early environment Snowball Earth hypothesis – mya – the earth may have been completely frozen over.

8 Phanerozoic Eon From 542 million years ago to present
The Cambrian period includes fossils with hard body parts such as shells and bones Also known as the Cambrian explosion for the great diversity of organisms. This was aided by Earth’s temperature increased Sea levels rose Warm shallow seas provided environments for rapid evolution of new organisms

9 Phanerozoic Eon Con’t Mass extinctions occurred at the end of the cretaceous period Asteroid impact hypothesis has greatest support currently

10 Just interesting info…
Making a crater as large as the Gulf of Mexico requires an asteroid between 50 and 100 miles (80 to 160 km) across; large enough to span the distance between the cities of Tampa and Orlando, Florida. An impacting asteroid is about 10 percent of the size of the crater it makes.

11 Just interesting info…
There's growing evidence that the dinosaurs and most their contemporaries were not wiped out by the famed Chicxulub meteor impact, according to a paleontologist who says multiple meteor impacts, massive volcanism in India, and climate changes culminated in the end of the Cretaceous Period.

12 Information searches should include
Add gov, edu or org to any search to get the most reliable information Include where you got your information – you may cut and paste the url – do not tell me that it came from yahoo, google or ask – those are search engines – tell me the website. NO Wiki
