AIM: What is Global Warming?
Do Now: In your notes, discuss what you know about global warming. What causes it? Can it be stopped?
2
I. Greenhouse Effect - Insolation (incoming solar radiation) is composed of infrared, visible, and ultraviolet wavelengths of energy.
3
- The energy can be: absorbed by the ground and re-radiated back towards space as infrared heat. reflected by the atmosphere (Albedo effect) Trapped by green house gases: CO2 Methane Water Vapor
4
Source of co2 and water vapor
As greenhouse gases increase, temperature increases; causing Global Warming Source of co2 and water vapor Source of methane
5
Greenhouse Gases: From Human Activity
DO NOT COPY Cars and factories Cows, termites and decomposing garbage

7
II. Causes of Global Warming
A) The burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, & gas) releases CO2 into the air.
8
The destruction of forests stops trees
from absorbing up CO2 during photosynthesis.
9
C) The burning of wood releases more
CO2 into the air. (forest fires)
10
D) Cattle, termites, & rice fields
release large amounts of Methane into the air.
11
III. Effects of Global Warming:
A) Shift in temp. and rainfall patterns.
12
B) Increased strength and number of
major storms due to temperature extremes.
13
Melting of polar ice caps and flooding of coastal areas.
