HOW TO STEP UP YOUR JAZZ PROGRAM! Panel Lecturer/Discussion Presenters: Mr. Erich S. Rivero, Glades Middle School Miami, FL Mrs. Michele Fernandez Denlinger. Palmetto Middle School, Miami, FL Mr. Ace Martin, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Jacksonville, FL Mr. Christopher Dorsey, Dilliard Center of the Arts, Ft. Lauderdale, FL Session Coordinators: Mr. Justin Mayer & Mr. Randy Folsom

LITERATURE SELECTIONS FOR FBA JAZZ BAND MUSIC PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENTS What to pick? Is it appropriate?

REHEARSAL TECHNIQUES How to Approach a piece? Score Study & Listen to Publisher Recording Practice with Publisher Recording (sometimes) First have them learn the written solo then add something to it, then get away from written solo. Have them write a solo at home Record and Evaluate Ensemble both by Students and Teacher Mini Recording Session/Play back recording immediately with sound system Have students mark parts after they listen to what they recorded Code Short hand A = Articulation D = Dynamics S = Style C = Clarity Differentiated Instruction: i.e. stand lights

WHAT SPICE COULD YOU ADD TO A CHART? Adding something to piece Adding Dynamics Add Drum Break Adding Appropriate Percussion Instruments to enhance the style. Bring in people to work your band Other Directors - respected directors in the field. Jazz Artists in your Community If not sure check with your Local College or University Faculty Look for professional recordings Research on youtube.com for ideas

INSTRUMENTION AND SET UPS Try having the ensemble rehearse in a circle Try having the Bari Sax and Bass Bone sit on the same side as the bass player In rehearsal have the saxes set up in a U shape so they can hear each other. Two schools of the thought: Have the bass play on the Hi Hat Side. More mature band : Have the bass play on the ride side

IMPROVING STYLE IN THE ENSEMBLE Understanding Accents and having a unified interpretation Staccato = DIT Cap or Rooftop Accent ^ = DOT Legato -- = DOO Marcato Accent > = DAH Think of the airstream: it is like an EKG it never stops unless it is a accented note in swing. Upbeat emphasis, Triplet Subdivision. If it starts with an up beat it has to have an accent. Mark Releases in parts i.e. -2, -3, -4 Always listen for clarity. Record rehearsals Release types: Air Release Tongue Stop

THINKING OF ADDING A VOCALIST? Have a talent show at school Find a great singer Get them to join your Jazz Band Figure out their range. Find charts in their range If you are not sure have the student listen to the recordings and hum along to figure out if it is comfortable for them and in their range. Adding a singer adds depth to your ensemble.
