Unit 7 – Exponents Topic: Exponential Properties & Scientific Notation

When is an exponential expression considered simplified? No negative exponents. All bases/coefficients have been completely reduced. No powers raised to powers. No products or quotients raised to powers.

Writing Powers of 10 in Regular Notation Positive Exponents –Start w/ 1 and move decimal n places right (value increases, number of 0s = exponent value). Negative Exponents –Start w/ 1 and move decimal n places left (value decreases, number of decimal places = exponent value).

Scientific Notation Using powers of 10 to represent very large or very small values. –General format: –If number in regular notation > 1, x is positive. –If number in regular notation < 1, x is negative.

Homework Handout from class –DUE next class Quest: Exponential Properties & Scientific Notation –DUE Friday, 2/10
