20. Mali was ruled by kings. Malian kings were very rich because they controlled all the trade of salt and gold.

21. Timbuktu is a major city in Mali. It was like the New York City of Mali.

23. Timbuktu was such an important city because it had a university with a huge library. Timbuktu was a “city of books” and knowledge. The library in Timbuktu had Greek and Roman books.

25. Oral Tradition (Storytelling) There was no written language in Mali. So there were no Malian books. To pass on stories and information generation to generation, people in Mali had storytellers.
