Apprenticeships and ‘Apprenticeships-Lite’ Apprenticeships A formal training programme Recruited to a job with training (employee status) Training in the workplace and an educational establishment Explicit legally binding contract Awarded a certificate to work in a specific occupation or group of occupations Tightly regulated and often backed by legislation. Social partner (collective employer bodies and trade unions) involvement Mutually beneficial to employer and apprentice Traineeships/Internships/ Pre-apprenticeships etc Work placement an element in VET programmes But temporary and fairly short Lead to formal qualifications And can lead to an apprenticeship proper But less likely to follow a defined learning programme or outcomes More heterogenous: –For unemployed young people; or –An mainly education based programme –Or poorly paid ‘internships’ for the better off Part of the strengthening of employer dimension to VET And becoming more the norm Employer benefits variable
