Narrative Essay Adjective Clauses & Appositive Phrases

2 Writing Tip #3 You can use Adjective Clauses and Appositive Phrases to combine information into one sentence and vary your sentence structures.

3 Adjective Clause An Adjective Clause begins with a relative pronoun and describes (modifies) a noun or a pronoun. The boy who was talking with me is my brother.

4 There are 5 relative pronouns that can introduce an Adjective Clause: who whom whose which that The girl who won the Spelling Bee is from my high school.

5 The person whom you met yesterday is my English teacher
The person whom you met yesterday is my English teacher. The student whose essay you read is an “A” student. The book which I read over the summer is an American classic.

6 A movie that I really like is Hoosiers
A movie that I really like is Hoosiers. Sometimes the relative pronoun is understood. The poem that you liked so much is one I wrote last year.

7 Appositives An Appositive is a noun or a pronoun placed beside another noun or pronoun to identify or explain it. The author Charles Dickens wrote some of Britain’s greatest novels.

8 Appositives My friend Jim is moving to Brazil. My dog Rusty is a collie. My favorite city Boston is very beautiful.

9 Appositives Phrases An Appositive Phrase is made up of an appositive and its modifiers. Kevin Durant, the star of the Oklahoma City Thunder, is only 24. I went to Kenyon College, a liberal arts institution in Central Ohio.
