LINES OF EVIDENCE FOR EVOLUTION Embryological Development “…..the strongest single class of facts in favor of change of forms.“ -Charles Darwin
2
Arrange the developmental stages for the pig, fish, chicken, human and calf from youngest to oldest
3
Most likely, you found this task difficult. Why do all these embryonic stages look so similar? What does this illustrate?
4
Line of Evidence: Embryological Similarities All these embryos share MAJOR structural features! a backbone, 4 limbs gill pouches (which are vestigial in all but the fish) These structures arise from the same embryonic tissues. Embryonic similarities give support that all vertebrates descended, with modifications, from the same common vertebrate ancestor.
5
LINES OF EVIDENCE FOR EVOLUTION Embryological Development Write a short paragraph in your lab notebook explaining why embryological development is such a strong line of evidence for evolution (this is your CLAIM!) Include specific details from this activity (this is you EVIDENCE!) Explain the meaning of the observations you made (this is your REASONING!)
