Update on Provincial Sanitation Strategy/ Plans In 2007 Provincial Working Group established 3 consultative sessions on Provincial strategy Draft is ready for final consultation To be taken to cabinet for approval after normalcy returns

IYS Targets and Achievements Public awareness campaign in 2008 in entire NWFP Sanitation week in selected TMAs with tent office of UNICEF and the TMAs.

Major On-going Sanitation related Initiatives Solid Waste Management is top priority for urban areas A MoU has been signed by CDG-Peshawar with private firm Solid Wsater Management project in Abbottabad and Swat

Institutional Arrangement for Sanitation Programmes WATSA cell Local Governance School for capacity building of stakeholders

Monitoring and coordination mechanism with different stakeholders including NGOs A provincial WATSAN cell has been established 2009 with assistance of UNICEF in Local Govt. Department. Cell will perform Coordination Monitoring Annual reporting on state of W&S in province Provincial Water and Sanitation Coordination Committee WASH Cluster - Emergency

Budgetary outlay for sanitation out of Government’s annual budget (Last 5 years) Waiting for approval of provincial Policy, strategy & action plan that will help in allocation of financial resources

Major Challenges Implications of abolishment of urban rural divide Lack of infrastructure in rural areas Special areas where government can not levy taxes Law & Order and security issues Lack of clarity in functional assignment between LG&RDD and PHED – overlapping & duplication and to be resolved Meager financial resources – Federal government to support Sensitization of political leadership to acknowledge sanitation as priority
