3 To explore Steinbeck’s use of foreshadowing in more detail
Foreshadowing is a technique used by the author to give hints to the reader about what will happen later in the text. The author may use symbolism, dialogue, metaphors, actions or other techniques to ‘tip the reader off’.

4 Examples of Foreshadowing
On one of your post-it notes, write an example of an event early on in the novel (write your name on it). On the other write what event it foreshadows later in the novel (number 2) Now place your post it notes on the timeline.

Lennie & the Girl in Weed Lennie killing the mice and then the puppy George saying life would be easier without Lennie Lennie crushing Curley’s hand – description similar to when he kills CW. 8 Steinbeck uses foreshadowing in the novel to give the reader a hint as to what will happen. For example, at the beginning of the story George says to Lennie ‘if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come right here an’ hide in the brush.’ This suggests that Lennie has a habit of doing things wrong. This is implied by the use of the words ‘trouble’ and ‘always’ which have negative connotations and tell the reader that Lennie is a troublesome character. Here, it is suggested that George fully anticipates that Lennie will get himself into trouble again and is pre-empting what they should do if this occurs, suggested by his comforting yet commanding tone. The foreshadowing is made clear when Lennie kills CW and George goes on to say ‘I should of knew…maybe way back in my head I did.’ This suggests…
