It was believed that illness was caused by the misdistribution of ‘humors’ in the body and the congestion of various organs. Treatment included any or all ways to remove excessive fluid…bleed, suck out lymph, induce vomiting, etc.

Early 1900’s Doctors recognized their skills in diagnosis and prognosis, but inability to provide effective treatment Subsequently, Therapeutic Nihilism’ -therapy by nothing- became prevalent. Doctors were expected to provide information and support. Current Hippocratic Oath: "I will apply for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism."

Vaccinations become available from basic research in immunology. Advances in surgical treatment and infectious disease treatment Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928.

Alternative therapies are increasing in popularity. While effective, treatment options are complex and expensive. Insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry have taken center stage, controlling much of the industry, and potentially interfering with the fundamentals of therapy.
