2 Who and What? large cities such as Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Jefferson County, Miami-Dade, Atlanta, Houston, and New York City. The science questions measured students’ knowledge of physical science, life science, and earth and space sciences. The results are reported as average scores on a 0–300 scale and as percentages of students performing at or above three achievement levels - basic, proficient and advanced.

3 Rankings The Detroit Public Schools has posted the worst science scores among 17 large cities that took part in the 2009 Trial Urban District assessment. It is the third subject that DPS fourth- and eighth -grade scores ranked last for 2009. The DPS scores ranked last on the reading test. The DPS math scores ranked the worst in the nation in the history of the test.

4 Report Card The average science score for DPS fourth graders was 111 out of 300, compared to an average score of 135 among large cities and a national average of 149. An eighth-grade average score was 113, compared to 134 among the urban districts and the national average score of 140.

5 DPS response… School district said the students had trouble reading the complex test questions. DPS had decided to lunch the DPS Reading Corps. More than 5,700 metro area adults have signed up for the Reading Corps to help tutor preschool students.
