2  Brandon has to find a book to read for a book report. He comes to you and tells you he has not read a complete book since sixth grade, and has no idea of where to begin. He also tells you he has to be back to class in fifteen minutes. You have fifteen minutes to review with him the three steps which will help him successfully find a book in your library. When you ask Brandon this question, he jokingly replies, if I don’t do this book report I don’t graduate.  Make sure you have a scrap paper and a pencil or pen. When you ask Brandon if he has a scrap paper and something to write with, he replies with a no. You quickly show him where to find a pencil and some paper which is put out for student use.  If it is for leisure, make a list of books or kinds of books you may want to read. You realize Brandon isn’t reading for leisure because he emphatically pointed out he hasn’t read a book since sixth grade. You hope you can hook him with a book that will give him the desire to read more.  If it is for a class assignment make a list of different criteria that has to be met. For example, are there a certain number of pages required? Does the books have to be by a British Author? Brandon has told you this book report is required to graduate. You ask him if the teacher had any special criteria for the book they chose. He tells you the book has to be at least 200 pages and by a British Author.  Using a piece of notepaper, write down the possible books you may want to read so you can write the books you find and their call numbers next to them. Finally, you ask Brandon the most important question. What do you like to read? He replied with, “I don’t know.” You smile and ask him to list some of his favorite movies. He replies with a list of movies that involves wars and a hero saving the day. Because you know your library, you instantly know he is looking for a Jack Higgins book, a British Author with over 200 page books. Now you just have to help him discover this.
