Design, measurement, analysis and visualization in SyStat Chong Ho Yu, Ph.D. Instruction, Research and Infrastructure Support Arizona State University March 28, 2000

What is the position of SyStat? SPSS has specific modules for different functions and purposes. SyStat packs virtually everything into one package. Examples…

Design of experiment SPSS’s Trial Run is made for DOE only. Include Response Surface Design

Design of Experiment SyStat has a built-in DOE module but is less powerful. For more info: http://seamonkey.ed.asu.edu/~alex/teaching/WBI/tr.html http://seamonkey.ed.asu.edu/~alex/teaching/WBI/tr.html

Missing Data Analysis There is a plug-in for MDA running within SPSS. The method is Expectation Maximization (EM). SyStat has a built-in MDA but is less powerful. More info: http://www.utexas.edu/cc/faqs/stat/ general/gen25.html http://www.utexas.edu/cc/faqs/stat/ general/gen25.html

Other built-in features Resampling Stat is specific for resampling while SyStat has a built-in bootstrap function. For more info: http://seamonkey.ed.asu.edu/~alex/teaching/WBI /resampling.html http://seamonkey.ed.asu.edu/~alex/teaching/WBI /resampling.html Biolog is for analysis of Item Response Theory while SyStat has a built-in tool for that. For more info: http://seamonkey.ed.asu.edu/~alex/teaching/WBI /measurement.html http://seamonkey.ed.asu.edu/~alex/teaching/WBI /measurement.html

Other built-in features SAS/Insight, JMP, and DataDesk are for data visualization while multivariate visualization is embedded in SyStat.

Function plot A regression model is essentially a function. Visualize multivariate relationships. Can also be done in Mathematica and Maple, but SyStat is easier. Regression mesh surface (Dynamic explorer) Contour Moasic

Function plot

Parallel Coordinate Display Examine response pattern across variables Used to be conducted in BMDP Diamond, but SyStat has this feature Unstandardized PCD may not be useful when the scales vary.

Parallel Coordinate Display

New feature Express Graph Work with SAS 6.12 Use SAS statistical procedures but SyStat graphics

Conclusion One package for everything? Good enough for students but researchers still need specific tools for different jobs.
