The Red Bat is one of Virginia’s 14 different kinds of bats. There are about 1000 different kinds of bats in the world. There are 45 different kinds of bats that live in the United States. 6 Gray Bats can eat as many as
3000 insects in one night!

8 Echolocation. Bats are not blind, but use echolocation to aid in flying at night. Bats emit sound waves at sound waves per second. This is at about 8 – 110 kHz (kilohertz) found at the low range of the AM radio band. Our normal hearing range is 30 – 15,000 Hz. We are able to hear some of the bats lower frequency calls.
