3
What is a cell? What is a cell?
A cell is the very smallest unit of living matter. All living things, including plants and animals, are made up of cells.
4
What is a cell? What is a cell?
There are many different kinds of cells, doing many different jobs in a plant or animal.
5
Animal Cells Animal and plant cells Cell surface membrane Cytoplasm
Nucleus
6
Cell Surface Membrane Cell membrane
This surrounds the cell and holds the cell together. It also controls what chemicals can enter and leave the cell.
7
Nucleus Cell membrane The nucleus controls the cell. Inside the nucleus is DNA which contains genetic information.
8
Cytoplasm Cell membrane
Cytoplasm is a jelly-like mixture of chemicals where most of the work of the cell takes place
9
Parts of a Plant Cell Plant cell parts
Plant cells may contain some extra parts. Cell surface membrane Cytoplasm Nucleus
10
Chloroplasts (plant cells)
Chloroplasts are disc shaped and contain chlorophyll (green pigment) for photosynthesis. Chloroplasts
11
Chloroplasts (plant cells)
Cell Wall Chloroplasts (plant cells) A cell wall which is a strong outer layer to support the cell and give it shape. Cell Wall
12
Chloroplasts (plant cells)
Vacuole Chloroplasts (plant cells) A vacuole where the plant cell stores sap (the food that it has made; a mixture of sugars, salts and water). Vacuole

Draw a line to match the parts of the cell to the correct cell
Draw a line to match the parts of the cell to the correct cell. Some parts are in both animal and plant cells! Chloroplasts – green bits which contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis. Cytoplasm – where the chemical reactions that go on in the cell happen. Cell membrane – lets substances such as dissolved gasses in and out of the cell. Vacuole – A space inside the cell filled with a watery liquid. This helps the cell to keep its shape. Animal cell Cell wall – a tough, supporting wall made from cellulose. It’s like a cardboard box surrounding the cell. It helps the cell keep its shape. Plant cell Nucleus– acts like the brain of the cell. Where all the information is held.

Homework project Create a model of an animal cell or a plant cell
Use the level ladder to help you get the best level possible

Interesting cell facts:
Like all living things, cells die. If you watched a clock for one minute, about three billion cells in your body die. x
18
Interesting cell facts:
In that same minute, about three billion cells divided so that all the cells that died were replaced. x
19
Interesting cell facts:
Dead skin cells flake off and dead cells from internal organs will pass through and out of the body with waste products.
20
Interesting cell facts:
The length of time cells live can vary. White blood cells 13 days Red Blood Cells 120 days Liver cells 18 months Nerve Cells 100 years
