The Sacrifice of Jesus To explore how Jesus sacrificed his life. Because of the things that Jesus taught and because he claimed to be the Son of God, the Jews and the Romans saw Jesus as a troublemaker (e.g. healing on the Sabbath and his Parables). They decided to put him on trial and then sentence him to death. Jesus didn’t defend himself, he knew he had to die and knew this had to be in a very public way.

Historical Background Israel was ruled by the Romans and was an occupied country. 27,000 soldiers were billeted in a country smaller than Wales. The Jews hated the Romans because they were idol worshippers – they thought this must be a punishment from God. They also had to pay very heavy taxes to the Romans The Jewish people had been ruled by foreigners for over five hundred years. They were sure that God would put an end to this soon. They longed for a hero to save them. The Messiah, the anointed or chosen one.

The Last Supper Jesus ate a Passover meal with the disciples in secret. It was a day early. He told them he would not eat or drink again until he came to his Father’s kingdom. Jesus took bread and said “This is my body which is to be broken for you “ He took a cup of wine “This is my blood which is to be shed for the forgiveness of your sins – do this in remembrance of me.” He led them out to the garden of Gethsemane to pray. He was so frightened that his sweat fell like drops of blood to the ground.
