Respiration Opposite Equation of Photosynthesis
2
Opposite of Photosynthesis is respiration C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + Energy ATP Glucose + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy REACTANTS PRODUCTS REACTANTS PRODUCTS
3
Steps in Respiration 1. Glycolysis (in cytoplasm) no oxygen needed (anaerobic process) Anaerobic = with out oxygen Anaerobic = with out oxygen 2. Pyruvic Acid – (3 carbon) sugar 3. Citric Acid Cycle (KREB CYCLE) – produce ATP every turn in the cycle
4
Anaerobic Respiration 1. Lactic Acid Fermentation – supplies energy when oxygen is scarce (tired muscle) Lactic acid is transferred from muscle cells where it is produced during strenuous exercise, to the liver that converts it back to pyruvic acid. Lactic acid is transferred from muscle cells where it is produced during strenuous exercise, to the liver that converts it back to pyruvic acid. The lactic acid that builds up in muscle cells results in muscle fatigue The lactic acid that builds up in muscle cells results in muscle fatigue
5
Anaerobic Respiration 2. Alcoholic Fermentation – yeast cells to produce CO 2 ethyl alcohol (wine making)
6
Cellular Respiration Uses one molecule of glucose to produce 36 ATP molecules Glycolysis provides a cell with a net gain of 2 ATP molecules Takes place in the MITOCHONDRIA
