2 April 18 th, 1775-3 men rode on horseback William Dawes, Dr. Samuel Prescott, & Paul Revere Carrying message that “The redcoats are coming” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a poem about this Patriots were worried-They were afraid that war was going to be starting Patriots- The colonists who wanted freedom from Britain Samuel Adams & some patriots expected war Most patriots wanted to find a peaceful way to settle this Loyalist- The colonists who wanted to stay as Brit. subjects

3 One if by Land, Two if by Sea War was a scary thought Britain=Great pwr. Colonies=Scattered & little military experience New England stockpiled cannonballs & gunpowder Concord, MA-20 mi. NW of Boston Revere & his friends found out the Brit. were going to march on Concord to get the ammunition Revere also nervous for his friends Sam Adams & John Hancock- Brit. were looking for them to hang them as traitors Someone needed to send a warning to Concord

4 One if by Land, Two if by Sea Would the Brit. go by land=Longer or go by boat=Shorter Dawes went by land & rode on horseback Revere sent a spy to find out what way the Brit. were going to march Then the spy was to climb into the bell tower at the North Church & send a signal Light 1 lantern if they go by land & light 2 lanterns if they go by sea Revere went by boat on the Charles R., then got on a horse on the Charlestown shore, & waited quietly

5 One if by Land, Two if by Sea Revere found out that Brit. were going to take the boat route Dawes & Revere rode in the countryside to warn that the Brit. were coming Met in Lexington to tell Sam Adams & John Hancock to flee Dawes & Revere were stopped by the Brit. Patrol & their horses were taken away Dr. Samuel Prescott was able to escape the Brit. ride to Concord, & tell everyone that the Brit. were coming American farmers were ready & grabbed guns Minutemen-Could fight on a moments notice Capt. John Parker led minutemen “Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon. But if they mean to have a war let it begin here!”

6 One if by Land, Two if by Sea The Battle began at Lexington Each side said the other fired the 1 st shot Ralph Waldo Emerson called it “The shot heard round the World” 8 American farmers died April 19, 1775 the American Revolution started British marched to Concord Wanted gunpowder, but couldn’t find any Started a fire because they were mad Minutemen under Capt. Isaac Davis fired at the Brit. on the North Bridge in Concord Brit. were scared, tried to retreat, & Americans whipped them-2 Brit. Fell/1 Amer.

7 One if by Land, Two if by Sea The song “Yankee Doodle” was made up to make fun of the Americans “Yankee Doodle” was a backwoods hick that didn’t know how to fight As Brit. marched to Concord & Lexington they wore their fancy uniforms & played “Yankee Doodle” After the battle, the Americans played “Yankee Doodle” “We’ll be Yankee Doodles & proud of it!”
