ILLINOIS DRIVER’S LICENSE
Approved driver education programs consist of at least 30 successful classroom hours. Once classroom is completed and blue card is received, you may be eligible to receive a permit if you are between the ages of Questions: What is does a permit allow you to do? How do you obtain a permit?

Under what conditions can you legally drive with an instruction permit? Parent/guardian/instructor/responsible adult At least 21 years of age With a valid driver’s license At least one year of driving experience

Instruction permit Cost ($20.00) Good for 24 months beyond issue date (if you do not receive your license within this time, you may be required to pay an additional fee) Must be held at least 9 months (16+) before one can obtain an Illinois Driver’s License

To obtain your drivers license: The Illinois Secretary of State must receive a completion date from the Board of Education. Complete a minimum of 50 hours behind the wheel practice ( Proper identification

Renewing Your license The state will notify you in writing about 90 days before your license expires therefore: The law requires you to notify the state within 10 days of an address change. Persons with clean driving records may be able to renew online or go to the Drivers Service facility only once every 8 years under the Safe Driver Renewal (must be between with a SS number)

Illinois Driver’s License
If you lose your license, you must go to the facility to obtain another and pay for it ($5). To correct your license, you must go to a Driver’s Services facility and pay for it ($5). 30 days for a name change 10 days for an address change

Proof of Identity & Residency
You can only claim residency in one city. You cannot have a license, permit or ID card from another state and also one from Illinois. Original documentation needed (

License Classifications
Class A for vehicles towing vehicles over 10,000 lbs Class B for vehicles towing vehicles under10,000 lbs Class C for Commercial motor vehicles, vehicles designed for 16+ passengers, transporting hazardous materials Class D for a basic driver’s license Class M for motorcycles/motorbikes/mopeds

Color Codes If you are under age 21, the words “Under 21 Until” will appear in red and “Under 18 Until” will appear in yellow along the right side of the photo. (

Chapter One: Look it Up Name 2 out of 3 ways a person can update his address with the Secretary of State. What does a Class L allow you to drive? What are “special permits”? Name one Exemption for driving without a valid license in Illinois. Name one Special Service the Secretary of State office extends.
