Backstory Shapiro is a former UM football booster who is currently imprisoned for a $930 million Ponzi scheme. He engaged in rampant violations of NCAA rules over eight years as a booster for UM athletes. In August 2010 Shapiro told the Miami Herald that he was writing a book in which he promised to tell how Miami had violated NCAA rules affecting more than 100 players.

Media Coverage August 2010 Shapiro begins he’s book “The Real U: 2001 to 2010. Inside the Eye of the Hurricane.” August 16, 2011 Yahoo Sports conducted a jailhouse interview with Shapiro. August 17, 2011 story picked up by ESPN, ABC, CNN, CBS, FOX, ect. August 2011 NCAA announce the suspension of 8 football players. (http://timekeepingscore.files.wordpress.com)

What happened next? A total of 12 players was suspended. Quarterback Jacory Harris was suspended for six games and had to pay back $140. Defensive starter Olivier Veron was also suspended for six games and had to repay $1,200. Six of 12 players, including the quarterback, missed the opening game for the 2011-2012 season. 6 What happened next? (cont.) Two of the 12 players missed four games. The remainder of the 12 players was suspended for one game. Four more players must repay amounts lower than $100, but were not suspended. http://graphics.fansonly.com/schools/mifl/)

What happened next? (cont.) UM Head Coach Al Golden suspended wide receiver Aldarius Johnson indefinitely. Boosters at this time are not allowed on the football field during games. http://canesfest.com/pics/d/)

PR Lesson Learned What worked well; – Miami coach Al Gordon held a press conference, where he publicly agreed with the NCAA decisions. – UM agreed to pay $83,000 to bankruptcy trustee in the case of Nevin Shapiro. What did not work well; – UM football had a prior scandal resulting to the team being on probation in the late 90’s. – Due to the 2011 suspension of 12 players in total, UM football season was 6-6, resulting in a mediocre season. 9 Lesson for UM Do this; – Seasonally NCAA workshop specially on the rules of accepting gifts, money, special benefits, etc. – Early reeducations from the athletic departments for minor issues that could lead to breaking NCAA rules. Don’t do this; – Boosters and football players relationships should be not be allowed. This should be a permanent rule. http://images5.fanpop.com/image/photos/24700000/Miami-Canes-miami-hurricanes)
