Article 5: Adam and Eve’s Disobedience “What I do, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate.” –Saint Paul in his letter to the Romans – We sin even when we know it’s wrong – Have you ever had this experience? – The attractiveness of sin is related to the sin of our first parents The Fall-

What Was The Original Sin? The author of Genesis believed that the full knowledge of good and evil belonged to God alone, therefore Adam and Eve were trying to become God himself The irony is that they were already created in God’s image and likeness Not

Biblical Etiologies Etiology- Genesis gives answers to a number of questions that ancient people had about the world. – Why are snakes shunned by other animals? – Why don’t snakes have legs? – Why is childbirth so painful? – Why is it so hard for men and women to get along? – Why is earning a living so much work? – Why do we have to die? Science today explains many of these questions, but in symbolic language this etiology explains the spiritual result of the Fall

Article 6: Original Sin A Consequence of the Fall Original Sin- “Latin word “origo” meaning beginning or birth “ 1) 2) “Adam and Eve transmitted to their descendants human nature wounded by their own first sin and hence deprived of original holiness and justice” (CCC, 417)

The Results of Original Sin Concupiscence- As a result of original sin, human nature is weakened. The loss of original holiness and justice make things that should be natural to us harder and more challenging. This leads to more pain and suffering in our lives Our relationship with God is now clouded and hidden We now experience death However there is still HOPE……… = Jesus’ Passion, death, Resurrection and Ascension
7
Grace and Redemption Grace- The fullness of grace is revealed in the saving life, death and Resurrection of Jesus We do not deserve the gift of grace. This does not mean that we are bad or unworthy people; rather it means that the gift God offers us is too great for us to ever earn it. Grace allows us to share in the divine life of the Blessed Trinity We receive grace as Catholics from the 7 Sacraments
