The subjunctive is used in a 2 clause sentence where the independent clause contains an expression of doubt or uncertainty.

Verbs that express “doubt” dudar (to doubt) Dudo que vayamos al parque hoy. I doubt that we are going to the park today. no *creer (to not believe) No creen que el Sr. Madan esté aquí hoy. They don’t believe that Mr. Madan is here today. * creer used affirmatively (without a “no”) does not require subjunctive.

Creer (to believe) Creo que Santa Claus me va a traer muchos regalos este año. I believe that Santa Claus is going to bring me many gifts this year. In an affirmative sentence with creer, use the INDICATIVE in the second clause.

No creer (to not believe (to doubt)) No creo que Moíses vaya a tener dinero al final del cuarto. I don’t think that Moíses is going to have any money left at the end of the quarter. In a negative sentence, use the SUBJUNCTIVE in the second clause.
