1 Understanding Multiplication and Division

2 Today we will be learning:
more about multiplication and division that division is the same as sharing or grouping.

3 Mental Activity We are going to practise counting on and counting back. We will count on and back in steps of different sizes.

4 Start at 30. Count on in twos.
Start at 15. Count on in threes. Start at 25. Count on in fives. Start at 50. Count on in tens.

5 Start at 40. Count back in twos.
Start at 36. Count back in threes. Start at 60. Count back in fives. Start at 120. Count back in tens.

6 Main Activity Today we are going to work with arrays.
We will learn to divide them into rows and columns.

7 This can be split into three groups of two.
Here is an array. This can be split into three groups of two. Can you think of a number sentence to show this? 6  3 = 2 Three groups of two equal six. 3 x 2 = 6

8 It can also be split into two groups of three.
Can you think of a number sentence to show this? 6  2 = 3 Two groups of three equal six. 2 x 3 = 6

9 Can you write one division and one multiplication sentence for it?
Here is another array. Can you write one division and one multiplication sentence for it? 8  2 = 4 2 x 4 = 8

10 Can you write another division and another multiplication sentence?
8  4 = 2 4 x 2 = 8

11 Top Tip Multiplication sentences can be written in any order.
4 x 2 gives the same answer as 2 x 4

12 Top Tip Division sentences cannot be written in any order.
The total number of objects in the array must come first. 8  4 does not give the same answer as 4  8

13 Group Work Divide arrays into columns and rows.
Make different arrays using counters. Record four and complete the multiplication and division sentences for each. Divide arrays into columns and rows.
