17 Things You Need to Know To Be a Great School Librarian -From Judy Freeman’s Books Kids Will Sit Still for 3: A Read Aloud Guide

1. Always read with expression “Let your listeners discover there are wonderful voices in books.”

2. Read EVERYTHING Find your top 100 fabulous, new-to-you titles each year. Student: “Have you read every book in the library?” Librarian: “No, but I'm working on it.”

3. Read off your grade level “Children's literature is your field. Every children's book you read, no matter the level, prepares you for the work do: changing kids' lives. And each book helps you understand children a little more.”

4. Don't underestimate the quick and dirty. Planning is important, but impromptu activities can be very effective, and being flexible is required.

5. Start bundling. Why introduce just one book when you can introduce 5 or 10? Get more books into children's hands. Bundle them together by topic, theme, or anything else that connects the stories.

6. Never throw anything out. You never know when you might use something for a prop, a display or decoration. Use objects to surprise & delight your students. Just make sure you store & organize them well.

7. Don't be afraid to weed. “Freshly weeded shelves, no matter how sparse, look far more appealing than shelves stuffed with old, dry, dowdy volumes.”

8. Laugh every day. Kids laugh over 300 times per day. Adults laugh only 17. Shoot for 300. It's good for you. And it will make the kids come to you.

9. Be unpredictable and indispensable. “Your children should always marvel at what happens in the library,” and your teachers should be unable to teach without you.

10. Let the kids do it, too. Let go of some of your control.

11. Ask for help. Don't try to do it all, just try to do your best. And when it gets to be too much, ask for help – from teachers, students or parents.

12. Find a mentor. Find a librarian friend with whom you can brainstorm – and vent.

13. Eat lunch in the teacher's lounge. “Oh, I had so much to do, I just ate at my desk,” librarians say wearily or defiantly or righteously.” “You are not a monk.”

14. Make lists. “I don't think you're allowed in this field unless you're a list-maker.” Find a personal organizational system that works for you. Don't waste time looking for things you've lost.

15. Learn something new every year. “Give yourself a learning curve; you don't need to know everything your first year. But if you act like you know everything, it can't hurt.” Pick a few areas to work on each year, and become an expert in that area.

16. Develop yourself professionally. Our field is the teaching of everything.

17. Recognize that you will never catch up. Remember the 2-minute rule: You will never have more than 2 minutes to do anything in this profession. Accept this. Then become wonderfully proficient at making the most of those two minutes.
