IPTV Introduction Definitions : Many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams over IP networks, transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. 3
4
IPTV Introduction Definitions : One official definition approved by the International Telecommunication Union – Telecommunication Standardization Sector focus group on IPTV (ITU-T FG IPTV) is: “ IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service(QoS)/ quality of experience(QoE), security, interactivity and reliability. ” 4

NGN Introduction 13 Definitions : A next-generation network (NGN) is a packet- based network which can provide services including Telecommunication Services and able to make use of multiple broadband, quality of Service-enabled transport technologies and in which service-related functions are independent from underlying transport- related technologies. It offers unrestricted access for users to different service providers. It supports generalized mobility which will allow consistent and ubiquitous provision of services to users.
14
NGN Introduction 14 The NGN functional architecture shall incorporate the following principles: - Support for multiple access technologies - Distributed control - Open control - Independent service provisioning - Support for services in a converged network - Enhanced security and protection - Functional entity characteristics

NGN Introduction 17 ITU-T has developed three IPTV architectures that enable service providers to deliver IPTV services - Non-NGN IPTV functional Architecture (Non-NGN IPTV) - NGN-based non-IMS IPTV Functional Architecture (NGN-Non-IMS IPTV) - NGN IMS-based IPTV Functional Architecture (NGN-IMS-IPTV)

Conclusion NGN can provide IPTV services more efficiently through managed IP and convergence broadband capabilities. The challenge to a successful IPTV service lies not only in the underlying transport networks but also in the need for service applications and their platforms to adapt to new business models. 22
