2 Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 Read the articles provided, from DEFRA’s website. Summarise what the law says in relation to the treatment of horses. What are the current proposed changes? Write your answers on the poster paper.

4 Laws & regulations governing horse health practitioners Working in pairs, pick 1 example and research the following points, preparing a handout written in your own words: What is the governing body for that practitioner? What qualifications did they need by law? To register / become a member of their governing body, what requirements did they have to meet? What does the law say about what treatments they are allowed to carry out?

5 Veterinary referrals What happens when a veterinary referral is required? What can cause a veterinary referral to be necessary? What issues will have to be considered?

6 How far do we go? As veterinary medicine and technology continues to advance, what are the associated issues? Pros? Cons? At what point do we decide to stop treating? Consider: Retirement Euthanasia Cost versus effectiveness of treatments
