3
Theories of evolution Adaptation And Natural selection
4
Adaptations are: The result of beneficial mutations Are present in all living things Help an organism deal with it’s environment
5
Adaptation increases survival By providing camouflage for both predators and prey
6
Adaptation increases survival By providing protection from predators A tortoise’s high domed shell is difficult for predators to bite or crush
7
Central heating and air Polar bears have hollow and translucent hair that transmits the sun’s heat internally to the skin Adaptations help deal with hot or cold environments
8
Adaptations make life easier A giraffe’s long neck helps it graze the tops of trees where is has to compete with few other animals for resources
9
They help fish “fish” The angler fish uses it’s lure to bring it’s prey to it. This helps it conserve it’s own energy.
10
Adaptations aren’t just physical It has been proposed that the Diana monkey has different vocalizations to warn others of predators.
11
Theories of evolution Natural selection
12
Living things that are suited to their surroundings survive More live to breed Their gene’s get passed on
13
Theories of Evolution Species formation
14
A species is…. Able to breed with others of it’s species and form fertile offspring The smallest group of living things in a classification
15
A new species forms when Members of the same species are separated
16
A new species forms when Over thousands of years each develops new traits Individuals with favorable traits live and reproduce
17
Natural selection has taken place The two groups gradually become different because their environment is different In time they become separate species They can no longer reproduce with one another
18
The End Evolution
