Northwestern Coastal Tribes Warm-Up Questions 1. Why did it take so long for Early Humans to spread out through Canada? (DOK 2) 2. Where do you think Early Humans moved to first in Canada? Why? - These tribes settled on what is now the west coast of Washington state in the U.S up through Alaska on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. They fished and built boats. Since they had access to fishing year- round, they could live in permanent settlements in structures called longhouses…

In Northwest Coast culture, their customs, beliefs, and history were passed down orally through stories, songs, and dances. In their culture, spirits were connected to all living things Their culture had 2 people in charge of the villages, the Chief and the Shaman (Holy Man) They would carve Totem Poles that would represent stories and their religion. Some could be over 100 feet tall! They would also weave blankets and make pottery masks

Most of their structures and carving were made from Cedar trees. They were the first Canadian tribes to use metal (Iron) tools… Many times they would avoid war by giving gifts They would also hunt animals such as deer, elk and mountain goats
