Illegal Drugs

Stimulants Speed up the central nervous system. They cause increased heart and respiratory rates, high blood pressure, dilated pupils, and decreased appetite. Users may experience sweating, headaches, blurred vision, dizziness, and sleepless ness. Extremely high doses can cause irregular heart beat, tremors, loss of coordination and even physical collapse. Can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure that can result in stroke, high fever, or heart failure. Can cause moodiness, restlessness, and anxiety. Chronic users can experience hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia.

Depressants Also known as sedatives, are drugs that tend to slow down the central nervous system. Depressants relax muscles, relieve feelings of tension and worry, and bring on sleep. They slow down the heart and breathing rates and reduce blood pressure. Depressants can easily cause physical and psychological dependence. Combining depressants and alcohol has a synergistic effect and increased health risks. Can lead to depression of central nervous system and death.

Narcotics Some are used to relieve pain. Made from opium and help relieve pain and suffering. Can cause drowsiness and can result in physiological dependence. Can cause a stupor or sleep and can result in coma or death.

Hallucinogens Alter mood, thought, and senses, including vision, hearing, smell, and touch.

Inhalants Substances with fumes that are sniffed and inhaled to give a hallucinogenic high.
