Immediate (Straightaway) effects of exercise on the cardiovascular system What happens to….. Why? Adrenaline……Because……. Heart rate…. Because……. Blood Pressure….. Because…….

What is the cardiovascular system made up of?

HeartThe Heart is a muscular pump, which pushes blood throughout the many blood vessels of the body BloodHas two main functions * to supply the body with O2 and nutrients * to remove waste products such as CO2 Blood vesselsArteries, Veins, Capillaries Are the blood vessels that run throughout the whole body allowing blood to travel EVERYWHERE

Blood Pressure The heart makes 2 beating sounds The first is called SYSTOLE and is made by the lower chambers pushing blood under high pressure into the arteries. It is the maximum pressure in the arteries when the heart beats. It rises during activity as more blood is required by the body. The second is called DIASTOLE and is made by the upper chambers contracting, pushing blood into the lower chambers. It is the pressure of the blood during the relaxation phase of the heart beat The second is called DIASTOLE and is made by the upper chambers contracting, pushing blood into the lower chambers. It is the pressure of the blood during the relaxation phase of the heart beat A healthy young adult has a blood pressure of approx 110/75 PULSE PRESSURE is the difference between systolic pressure and diastolic pressure

Abnormal Blood Pressure SYSTOLIC -Persistently above 140SYSTOLIC -Persistently above 140 DIASTOLIC-Persistently above 85DIASTOLIC-Persistently above 85 Pulse Pressure-Constantly above 50 or below 30Pulse Pressure-Constantly above 50 or below 30 What can you do? Check your weight Limit alcohol Don’t smoke Reduce salt intake Avoid stress Regular exercise keep your cardiovascular system in good shape

Plenary In Pairs discuss and answer the following, attach your answers to the questions wall What are the immediate and short term effects of participation in exercise and physical activity: includingWhat are the immediate and short term effects of participation in exercise and physical activity: including Why does Heart rate increaseWhy does Heart rate increase What is Systolic/Diastolic blood pressureWhat is Systolic/Diastolic blood pressure How can we maintain a healthy blood pressureHow can we maintain a healthy blood pressure Homework: Produce an A4 leaflet warning of the dangers of Alcohol and smoking/nicotine on “blood pressure”Homework: Produce an A4 leaflet warning of the dangers of Alcohol and smoking/nicotine on “blood pressure”
