2  Material covered in this exam… ◦ Guided reading from chapter 15 ◦ Lecture on London and the opening ceremonies ◦ Lecture on Northern Ireland Conflict ◦ The Simulation about Protestant Parades and the readings that accompanied the simulation. ◦ Lecture and materials about France from today and tomorrow. ◦ We will review on Friday and a study guide will be provided.

7  They expect that visitors have some knowledge and appreciation for their culture.  The country seeks to maintain its identity by resisting cheap fast food, foreign sitcoms, and American music.

9  French is an important international language. It is an official language of the UN and the Olympics.  French students begin their first language at 9, and another at age 13.

10  School runs from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm  Two hour lunch.  High School lasts seven years.  After 4 years they either go the academic route or a technical route.  After 3 years of secondary school they are required to take the baccalaureat.

11  Philosophy exam: ◦ Does language betray thought? ◦ Does the objectivity of history imply the historian’s impartiality?  Geography: ◦ Describe the economic power and land diversity of the European Union. ◦ How is the Mediterranean an interface between the North and the South.

12  Students who pass the exam can go on to a free college.  Students who do well on the baccalaureat can take an entrance exam to attend elite schools.

13  The minimum wage in France is €9.61($10.22) per hour.  They have a 35 hour work week.  The government mandates 5 weeks of paid vacation to every salaried worker.
