“ARE WE RELYING TOO MUCH ON OUR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS TO DO OUR TEACHING FOR US?” AS YOU REVIEW THE ARTICLE – USE 4AS TEXT ANALYSIS READ THE ARTICLE AND FIND SECTIONS OF THE TEXT FOR EACH OF THE AS: AGREE, ARGUE, ASPIRE, AND ASSUMPTION (SEE HANDOUT FOR INSTRUCTIONS) POST READING – DISCUSSION(3 OR MORE TO SHARE EACH POINT—USE THE TEXT!) WHAT DO YOU AGREE WITH? WHAT DO YOU ARGUE WITH? WHAT DO YOU ASPIRE TO ACT UPON OR DO DIFFERENTLY? WHAT DOES THIS AUTHOR ASSUME IS TRUE? WHY DO YOU THINK THAT?

HOMEWORK: THINGS TO THINK ABOUT “WHATEVER WE DO, WE MUST PROVIDE FEEDBACK ON HW ASSIGNMENTS” NEVER GIVEN TO STUDENTS SO THEY CAN LEARN THE MATERIAL HE FIRST TIME AROUND NOT JUST DECORATIVE OR CLERICAL PARENTS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO TEACH IT SHOULD NOT TAKE AWAY FROM AFTER SCHOOL EXERCISE OPPORTUNITIES DO NOT JUST ASSIGN HW BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT YOU THINK YOU SHOULD DO SHOULD NOT BE A TASK KIDS WILL RESENT IF IT IS “SKIP-ABLE”, THEN DO NOT ASSIGN IT SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN OVER WEEKENDS OR BREAKS GIVEN IN ORDER FOR STUDENTS TO PRACTICE, REINFORCE AND EXTEND SHOULD ADVANCE OUR SUBJECTS SHOULD BE DONE BY STUDENTS SHOULD NOT TAKE LONGER THAN 50-100 MINUTES ONLY ASSIGN HOMEWORK WITH MERIT SHOULD BE ENJOYABLE GIVE OPTIONS FOR HW ASSIGNMENTS EXPECT EACH STUDENT TO TURN SOMETHING IN
4
THINK ABOUT YOUR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS GIVEN WHAT WE’VE LEARNED FROM THE ARTICLE, HOW DO YOU RATE YOURSELF? HOW MANY OF US ARE GUILTY OF GIVING HOMEWORK FOR THE PURPOSE OF ROUTINE? HOW OFTEN DO WE FORGET ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE EXTRACURRICULARS? DO WE GIVE CONSTRUCTIVE AND FORMATIVE FEEDBACK ON HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS? HOW MANY OF OUR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS REQUIRE THE HELP OF A PARENT?
5
CREATIVITY: MORE THAN OUR PINTEREST AND TEACHER’S PAY TEACHERS MEMBERSHIP
6
“WE GET BETTER AT THINKING CREATIVELY BY ACTUALLY THINKING CREATIVELY, SO LET’S PRACTICE IT FREQUENTLY” REFLECT ON YOUR 1 ST 9 WEEKS AS A TEACHER CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING WAYS TO EXPRESS YOUR REFLECTION REWRITE A NURSERY RHYME OR POPULAR SONG PERFORM A SKIT OR A PLAY DO AN INTERPRETIVE DANCE TELL IT AS A GHOST STORY PERFORM A DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE PAINT A PICTURE
7
LEVEL OF COMFORT “…LEARNING HOW TO THINK CREATIVELY IS KEY TO NOT ONLY STUDENTS SUCCESS, BUT TEACHER LONGEVITY AS WELL” HOW DID THE THOUGHT OF THIS ASSIGNMENT MAKE YOU FEEL? WHO WAS EXCITED ABOUT THE ASSIGNMENT? WHO WAS ANXIOUS ABOUT THE ASSIGNMENT? CREATIVITY IS MORE THAN JUST PHYSICALLY CREATIVE TASKS… CHANGE IN ROUTINE, PACE, DEPARTURE FROM THE NORM, AND THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX HOW WE CREATE CONNECTIONS AND INSPIRE STUDENTS THROUGH CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT, INSTRUCTION, AND OUR CLASSROOM CULTURE

CREATIVITY IN THE CLASSROOM HTTPS://WWW.TEACHINGCHANNEL.ORG/VIDEOS/3RD-GRADE-POETRY-LESSON HTTPS://WWW.TEACHINGCHANNEL.ORG/VIDEOS/3RD-GRADE-POETRY-LESSON HOW IS THE TEACHER BEING CREATIVE? HOW ARE THE STUDENTS BEING CREATIVE? WHAT PURPOSE DOES CREATIVITY SERVE IN THIS LESSON? CREATIVITY IN THE PLANNING PROCESS FOR TEACHER BUT ALSO CREATIVITY FOR STUDENTS IN PRODUCT JUST LIKE WITH TECHNOLOGY, CREATIVITY SHOULD NOT BECOME OUR SOLE FOCUS BUT RATHER BE A SEAMLESS COMPLEMENT TO HOW WE TEACH.
9
EDUTOPIA ARTICLE: 22 SIMPLE IDEAS FOR HARNESSING CREATIVITY IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CLASSROOM WHILE READING THE ARTICLE HIGHLIGHT THE STRATEGIES IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS: RED LIGHT = WHAT WOULD YOU BE UNCOMFORTABLE IMPLEMENTING? GREEN LIGHT = WHAT DO YOU ALREADY DO IN YOUR CLASSROOM? YELLOW LIGHT = WHAT IS SOMETHING NEW YOU ARE INTERESTED IN TRYING? TRY TO FIND A GREEN TO MATCH ONE OF YOUR RED’S OR YELLOW’S AND DISCUSS WHAT THAT STRATEGY LOOKS LIKE IN THE CLASSROOM.
