2. TEKS §113.3. Social Studies, Grade 1. (6) Geography. The student understands various physical and human characteristics of the environment. The student is expected to: (A) identify and describe the physical characteristics of places such as landforms, bodies of water, natural resources, and weather; (17) Social studies skills. The student applies critical-thinking skills to organize and use information acquired from a variety of sources including electronic technology. The student is expected to: (A) obtain information about a topic using a variety of oral sources such as conversations, interviews, and music; (B) obtain information about a topic using a variety of visual sources such as pictures, graphics, television, maps, computer images, literature, and artifacts; (D) identify main ideas from oral, visual, and print sources. §112.3. Science, Grade 1. (10) Science concepts. The student knows that the natural world includes rocks, soil, and water. The student is expected to: (A) identify and describe a variety of natural sources of water including streams, lakes, and oceans; §110.3. English Language Arts and Reading, Grade 1. 1) Listening/speaking/purposes. The student listens attentively and engages actively in a variety of oral language experiences. The student is expected to: (A) determine the purpose(s) for listening such as to get information, to solve problems, and to enjoy and appreciate (K-3); (C) participate in rhymes, songs, conversations, and discussions (K-3); 13) Reading/literary response. The student responds to various texts. The student is expected to: (A) listen to stories being read aloud (K-1); §117.5. Fine Art, Grade 1. (2) Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill. The student is expected to: (C) increase manipulative skills, using a variety of materials to produce drawings, paintings, prints, and constructions.

3. Speaking Brainstorm Have the children sit in a half circle for general class discussion about oceans. Use the globe to show where oceans are located and their size relative to lakes. Some things to discuss: -What is an ocean? -Is the ocean large or small? -What are some things you see in an ocean? -What might you bring with you when going to the ocean? -Can you drink the ocean water? -Are all creatures in the ocean fish? -What is a seashore? What are some things you may find on the seashore?

4. Reading Some of these books are previously read by the teacher. The students will go to the reading center and choose one of these books to read to their partners.

5. Technology The students will use the computer in the Technology Center to learn some of the different types of unusual fish and also learn what types of mouths they have in order to eat. Students will write down a few things they have learned about a fish’s mouth and tell what mouth they would want to be and why. Click on one of the fish below to get started.

6. Writing/Listening Students will watch and listen to the sing along below. When it is done playing, the students will write about what fish or animal they would be and tell a story about what they might see while swimming in the ocean. Also the students will go to the globe to find what ocean they would want to live in. The students would write it in their story.

7. Art In the art center the students will create their own ocean scene in a box. The boxes will include sharks, whales, fish, seaweed, corals, and anything else the students may want to put in it. Boxes will need to be collected before hand.

I'm a Sea Star With spiny skin My arms are called rays Pointed and thin If I lose an arm I can grow it back again I'm an invertebrate That can regenerate! I'm a Sea Star Living in the sea The mussels and oysters Are all afraid of me 'Cause when I get hungry For a little more I vacuum clean up The ocean floor! Sea Star, Sea Star, Sea Star Such a pretty sight But what an appetite! I'm a Sea Star Living in the sea When I get hungry For an ocean treat I take my stomach out to eat!

9. Viewing Have the students view the video of The Magic School Bus On the Ocean Floor. At the end of the video discuss really is on the ocean floor.
