Strategic Priorities for DDI Spring 2013 Mary Vardigan Director, DDI Alliance METIS -- Geneva, Switzerland May 6, 2013
2
Today’s Presentation About DDI and its benefits Priorities for the future Working together on new goals
3
What is DDI? A metadata specification of and for the community Two major development lines –DDI Codebook –DDI Lifecycle Metadata for both human and machine consumption Additional specifications: –Controlled vocabularies –RDF vocabularies for use with Linked Data
4
Lifecycle Orientation
5
Benefits of the DDI Approach Rich content (currently over 800 items) Metadata reuse across the life cycle Machine-actionability Data management and curation Support for longitudinal data and comparison
6
Global Reach
7
Strategic Priorities Data “ecosystem“ undergoing rapid change – how can DDI respond? 1. Restructuring for new success 2. Developing the next-generation DDI 3. Outreach to the community
8
Priority 1 -- Restructuring Aligning DDI governance structure to meet the needs of a mature organization Revised Charter and Bylaws with appropriate representation of the membership Secretariat housed at University of Michigan http://www.ddialliance.org
9
Priority 2 – Creating next-generation DDI Will be model-based –Easier to understand –Better interaction with other disciplines and standards –Easier to develop and maintain in a consistent way –Will enable more efficient software development Roadmap developed to guide model creation
10
Model Design Goals 1.Interoperability, Standards 2.Simplicity 3.User Driven 4.Terminology 5.Iterative 6.Documentation 7.Lifecycle Orientation 8.Reuse and Exchange 9.Modularity 10.Stability 11.Extensibility 12.Tool Independence 13.Innovation 14.Actionable Metadata
11
New Content Abstraction of data capture/collection/source to handle different types of data New content on sampling, survey implementation, weighting, and paradata New content related to qualitative data Framework for data and metadata quality Framework for access to data and metadata
12
New Content II Process description across life cycle, including support for automation and replication Integration with GSBPM/GSIM, SDMX, CDISC, Triple-S Disclosure review and remediation Data management planning Standard queries and/or interface specifications to enable interoperable services
13
Related Priorities Continue developing RDF vocabularies, to be published by the end of the year Pursue ISO certification for DDI, following success of SDMX Continue to provide training
14
Priority 3 -- Outreach to the Community Work with NSIs Several NSIs are DDI members SDMX-DDI dialogue Support for GSIM development
15
GSIM-SDMX-DDI Mapping GSIMDDISDMX
16
GSIM Work Developing implementation layer for GSIM Many correspondences between GSIM and DDI Mapping revealing relationships among DDI, SDMX, and GSIM and will expose gaps Hope to capitalize on the commonalities and also build out areas of DDI not currently covered
17
GSIM Model
18
Conclusion Three priorities take DDI into the future for success Looking forward to working with NSIs around GSIM Alliance would like to contribute to future collaborations
