3 Advanced Network and Services Management (Self-Organizing Networks) One of the most important trends in the wireless communication industry is advancements in network management, and the accompanying management of services. The goal of these advancements is to make network configuration as automated as possible, ultimately to have the networks self-configure. Thus, the term Self-Organizing Networks (SON) SON provides the ability to coordinate load balancing, particularly between LTE and eHRPD systems. SON also supports GREEN by allowing cells to coordinate powering off and on. [Source: SC.R5003-0 3GPP2 Vision for 2010 and Beyond]

4 SON (2 OF 2) The operator requirements for efficient network management and operation amplify the need for Self-Organizing Networks (SON). SON improves the ability of network elements to communicate information between elements and allows self-configuration relative to the other elements in the network. A multiple phase approach to the SON work in 3GPP2 is being pursued beginning with: –SON System Requirements (S.P0150-0) –CDMA-only Energy Saving (ES)-mode (A.S0010-0) –Coverage compensation for power-off (A.S0010-A) –Inter-RAT ES-mode for LTE-eHRPD and LTE-eHRPD load balancing requirements (in conjunction with 3GPP) [Sources: SC.R5003-0 3GPP2 Vision for 2010 and Beyond and WI 3GPP2-00299]

5 Green Revised Energy Efficient Network (GREEN) In the current era of worldwide attention given to global warming and the drive toward cleaner and more efficient products and technologies, 3GPP2 is doing its part to address these issues by developing and refining standards to be conducive to GREEN technologies. Issues being addressed include: –Battery life considerations for access terminals –Power consumption by infrastructure functional elements 3GPP2 developed a “Green Revised Energy Efficient Network (GREEN) – Technology Initiative Study for cdma2000 Wireless Networks” (S.R0140-0) [Source: SC.R5003-0 3GPP2 Vision for 2010 and Beyond]

6 Energy Savings (ES) Management is being addressed in A.S0010 “cdma2000 RAN Management”. –Provides the protocols and procedures to support cdma2000 ®1 RAN Management in the Radio Access Network (RAN). –Describes a new interface between CDMA RANs to allow RANs to notify each other when they are powering off resources, when they need a resource powered on to handle load or emergency traffic, and coverage compensation. 1 cdma2000® is the trademark for the technical nomenclature for certain specifications and standards of the Organizational Partners (OPs) of 3GPP2.
